Didn’t record with your webcam? No problem. CANVID's Generate Synthetic Webcam feature lets you add your webcam video after the fact, fully synced to your existing audio.

Whether you forgot to turn on your camera, were in a bad lighting situation, or just wanted to stay focused during the recording, this feature makes it look like you recorded your camera all along.

Generating a new webcam overlay by clicking the Synthetic Webcam button in the video editor

What is the Synthetic Webcam?

This feature uses AI to generate a webcam video that is lip-synced to your voice in the project. It works by using a reference video from another CANVID projects and then uses that video to generate a new webcam video where your your mouth and expressions are synced to the new audio.

The result? A seamless picture-in-picture webcam that looks like it was recorded live, even though it wasn’t.

When Should You Use It?

  • You recorded your screen without a webcam but want a personal touch
  • You weren’t camera-ready but want to appear on screen later
  • You want consistency across different videos by reusing a strong webcam take

How to Generate a Synthetic Webcam

1. Open a Project Without a Webcam

This feature only appears on projects recorded without a webcam. If a webcam was already used, it won’t be available.

2. Click “Generate Synthetic Webcam”

In the Camera tab of the editor, look for the Generate Synthetic Webcam section and click the button to get started.

3. Choose a Webcam Source

You’ll be given two options:

Option 1: Use Webcam from a Previous Project

  • Select a previously recorded CANVID project that includes your webcam
  • AI will extract the video and lip-sync it to the current project’s audio

Option 2: Record Your Webcam (Coming Soon)

  • This option will let you record a fresh 30-second webcam reference video
  • AI will then use this footage to sync with your existing narration

Note: The second option is currently disabled but planned for a future update.

4. Let CANVID Do the Rest

Once a source is selected, CANVID will:

  • Show a progress bar as it creates and syncs your webcam footage
  • Add the generated webcam to your project timeline
  • Let you customize its position, size, and background just like a real webcam

Customizing Your Synthetic Webcam

After generation, you can use all the standard Camera tab options:

  • Adjust size and corner roundness
  • Move position (top right, bottom left, etc.)
  • Apply a blurred, replaced, or removed background
