Let’s be honest. Sometimes you hit record and forget to turn on your camera. Or maybe you are not feeling camera ready. The lighting is off, your hair is a mess, or you simply want to focus on your screen. This is where CANVID’s Synthetic Webcam comes in. It lets you add a clean and convincing webcam clip after the fact.
What Is Synthetic Webcam?
Synthetic Webcam uses AI to generate a webcam video that is lip synced to your existing audio. It pulls a reference webcam clip from one of your past CANVID projects. In simple terms, it creates the illusion that you recorded yourself on camera at the same time as your screen recording. The result looks natural and polished with no retakes needed.
When You Should Use It
You will find this useful when:
- You recorded your screen without a webcam.
- You were not camera ready but still want that personal touch in your final video.
- You want to reuse a previous webcam style to keep your videos consistent.
How It Works
- Record or Open a Project Without a Webcam
The Synthetic Webcam option only appears when the project has no existing webcam footage.
- Click Generate Synthetic Webcam
Go to the Camera tab inside the editor and select the option.
- Choose Your Webcam Source
You can pick a webcam take from any past CANVID project. CANVID will extract that clip and match it with your current audio.
A second option is coming soon where you can record a short 30 second reference video for the AI to use.
- Let CANVID Process It
After you select the source, CANVID will begin generating the synthetic webcam. A progress bar appears and once it finishes, the video is added to your timeline automatically.
- Customize the Look
You can resize the webcam, round the corners, change the position, and apply background blur or background removal. Everything works the same way as a normal webcam track.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Synthetic Webcam works with Cloud AI and Local AI for users with Intel AI PCs or Intel Arc GPUs.
- You must have an active CANVID license, either subscription or lifetime, in order to use it.
- Since this is still a beta feature, projects are limited to 2 minutes and you may occasionally notice small lip sync issues or slight visual imperfections.
- At the moment, the best results come from English-language recordings.
In short, Synthetic Webcam gives you a simple way to add a personal on-camera presence even if you did not record one. No reshoots and no extra setup needed.
