Chapters
Chapters let you build a video from multiple recordings and imported videos in one CANVID project. Record each part separately, edit it in its own tab, then export the chapters together as one video.
You can also add chapters from a saved CANVID project, making it easy to reuse an introduction, demonstration, or closing section.
Add a Chapter
Open a project in the editor
Finish a new recording, or open an existing project.
Your recording appears as a chapter in the tab bar above the timeline.
Click Add Chapter
Click the + button next to the chapter tabs to open Add chapter.
Choose what to add
- Record Display: Record your screen as a new chapter.
- Record Window: Record an application window as a new chapter.
- Camera Only: Record a camera-only chapter.
- Select a Video or Project: Import a video file or add the chapters from a saved
.canvidproject.
For a new recording, choose your source and recording settings, then start and finish recording. CANVID adds the result to the current project as a new chapter.
Import a Video
Choose Select a Video or Project, then select an MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, or M4V file.
CANVID prepares the video in the background. An Importing… tab shows its progress, and you can continue editing other chapters while you wait. To cancel, hover over the importing tab and click its Cancel import button.
Add Chapters from Another Project
Choose Select a Video or Project, then select a saved .canvid project. CANVID adds all of its chapters to your current project, keeping their names and edits while fitting them to the current project's aspect ratio.
Edit Chapters
Click a chapter tab to open its preview and timeline. Each chapter keeps its own edits, so you can trim a recording, adjust its background, or work on its zooms separately.
New recordings and imported videos inherit styling from the chapter you are working on, including its background and caption styling. You can then customize each chapter individually. Chapters added from another CANVID project keep their existing styling.
Rename, Reorder, or Delete Chapters
- Rename: Right-click a chapter tab, or hover over it and click the three dots to open Chapter options. Choose Rename, enter a name, then click Save.
- Reorder: Drag a chapter tab left or right. The tab order determines the order of chapters in your exported video.
- Delete: Open Chapter options and choose Delete to remove the chapter from the project. A project must have at least one chapter, so you cannot delete the last one.
Set the Project Aspect Ratio
All chapters share one aspect ratio, even when the source recordings have different shapes or sizes.
If your project uses Auto, adding another chapter fixes the project aspect ratio to match the current chapter's frame. Auto is only available for projects with one chapter.
To change the ratio for the whole project, open Add chapter and click Change for all chapters…, or use the Aspect Ratio control near Crop. Review each chapter after changing the ratio to check its framing.
Export Chapters Together
Open Export
Click Export in the top-right corner of the editor.
Choose the chapters to include
For projects with multiple chapters, the export window shows a Chapters list with a checkbox for each chapter.
All chapters are selected by default. Uncheck any you want to leave out, or use Clear and select only the chapters you need. Use Select all to include every chapter again.
Select at least one chapter to enable export. To export a single chapter, leave only that chapter selected.
Export your video
Choose your export format and settings, then click Export to file. CANVID combines the selected chapters into one file in their tab order.
Leaving a chapter out of an export keeps it in your project, so you can create different versions without deleting any chapters.
For more on export settings, see Export as MP4 or Export as GIF. To keep all chapters editable for later, save your project.
