Improving Performance on Laptops

Boost CANVID's performance on your laptop by assigning the app to your NVIDIA GPU. Using an additional monitor as your primary display can also help resolve performance issues.

Some laptops have two GPUs. This setup is called switchable graphics because the laptop can switch between the two GPUs depending on what you’re doing.

If you're experiencing performance dips when using the screen recorder on your laptop, these troubleshooting steps should help fix these issues.

Set CANVID to High Performance

Go to Windows Settings

Open the Start Menu, then go to Settings (or type Settings in the search bar if it's not pinned)

Display Settings

Go to System > Display, scroll down and click Graphics under Related Settings.

Look for (or add) CANVID in the list

  • If it's not there, click Browse under Custom options for apps.
  • Copy and paste this in the address: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Canvid
  • Select Canvid.exe, then click Add.

Switch to High Performance

Once added, find CANVID in the list and click Options. Select High performance, then click Save.

Set the external monitor as your primary display

If you are using an additional monitor with your laptop, setting it as your primary display should help you work around the following known issues:

A. When set to run on High performance

  • If your laptop screen is the main display, only the external monitor is detected when you select Display Capture in the app.
  • If the external monitor is selected as your primary display, both monitors are detected.

B. When set to run on Power saving

  • If the external monitor is selected as your primary display, only the laptop screen is detected when selecting Display Capture in the app.
  • If your laptop screen is the primary display, both monitors are detected.

Go to Windows settings

Open the Start Menu, then go to Settings (or type Settings in the search bar if it's not pinned)

Go to Display

Select the System tab, then choose Display.

Main display setting

Select your external monitor, then check Make this my main display.

These steps are tested to work and should improve the app's performance when using a laptop with switchable graphics. If the issue persists, please review your computer if it meets the app's minimum or recommended system requirements. Feel free to contact us if you need further assistance.
